Jay Street Courthouse AV System
Jay Street Courthouse, Brooklyn, NY
Challenge:
When the $670 million Jay Street Courthouse was being constructed, they tasked our installation team with equipping all 84 courtrooms with state-of-the-art technology. To accommodate ease-of-use and maintenance factors, several aspects of the AV system were standardized.
Solution:
Each courtroom was installed with basic AV systems that function independently of each other, yet operate under one common control system: one to three Crestron touch screens are installed, totaling 175 systems in all. All floor boxes in each courtroom are the same, and only two types of projector lifts are utilized. In the early design stage, the installation team decided to work with converters and CAT5 cable, rather than coaxial cable. This decision allowed the team to reduce the floor boxes and conduit.
The installed video system for this project serves a dual purpose: it accommodates primary presentation needs within the courtroom, as well as provides distance communications for inmates appearing from a remote location. Another key feature of this AV installation is the private attorney/client phone. When the attorney picks up the phone, the audio is automatically muted, allowing the defendant to talk to his or her family in private after a proceeding.
The upfront courtrooms are equipped with gooseneck microphones, as well as one microphone for sidebar conferences. In addition, each upfront courtroom has been installed with loudspeakers, amplifiers and matrix mixers for improved audio quality. For this project, our team also included the use of Stanton headphones, helping to improve the efficiency of the court reporter's duties.
