HCC's 21st Century Classroom AV Installation

Hillsborough Community College (HCC), Tampa, FL

Design and Installation

Challenge:

With Hillsborough Community College (HCC) interested in developing the AV system to pioneer their "21st Century Classroom" project, they knew they could turn to our company for a high-quality integration. HCC depended on our expert team of engineers to design and install configurations for 70 classrooms across all four of HCC's campuses, which is home to more than 42,000 students and over 1,000 faculty members.

Over the six-month project period, our engineers faced several challenges with this installation, including the need to effectively develop multiple variations of systems in diverse classroom environments. The classrooms were designed to accommodate anywhere from 28 to 42 students, and installations would need to be scheduled around ongoing classes.

Solution:

Geared towards equipping instructors with modern technology to facilitate learning and improve student retention, each classroom was outfitted with ceiling-mounted projection systems from Epson. Additionally customizeed components include: desk teaching stations, manual screens, document cameras, storage and inputs for a PC with local monitor and input connectivity for a laptop, as well as asset management and distributed audio systems.

The basic system has a station where an instructor can sit or stand, equipped with an articulating keyboard and desktop podium, a high-quality lumen projector, ceiling speakers for sound reinforcement, a media switcher, amplifier, computer and monitor, an Extron MLC-104-IP or MLC-226 controller and two USB connectors on the desktop for connection to the PC. Laptops can be connected by a pull through VGA cable with audio cable. Through the use of a high-quality, high-output lumen projector, presentations can clearly be seen with the classroom lights on, further allowing interaction with the students.

All stations in the "21st Century Classroom" are equipped with a 19" flat panel monitor for easy viewing. The MLC controllers allow instructors to easily switch input sources (PC, laptop, document cameras, DVD & VCR), basic DVD/VCR control as well as system volume control. The included document camera allows viewing of print documents, 3-D objects, photos, slides, negative and positive film, and X-rays.

Equipment Highlights:
