Walter Reed Army Medical Center Conference Rooms

Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Design and Installation

Challenge:

Located in Washington, D.C., the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) provides population-based primary and specialty military health care for soldiers, other service members, families and retirees. In order to increase collaborative communications, the WRAMC was interested in the integration of high-quality videoconferencing and telemedicine technologies into their conference rooms.

Solution:

While the larger Emergency Operations Center is utilized for meetings, presentations and critical situations in which a large number of physicians and staff needed to be consulted, the Videoconference and Telemedicine Room is primarily used for private conferences.

In order to improve in the efficiency of operations, control systems for all newly integrated technology are shared between the two conference rooms. The WRAMC's Emergency Operations Center includes a large 8' x 10' front projection screen; this enables participants seated at the Center's U-shaped table a clear view of all presentations. The 4000 lumens, ceiling mounted Christie Digital projector provides high-resolution viewing for both videoconference calls and medical images. While two 42" Fujitsu plasma monitors are mounted on the side walls for displaying images, Sony video cameras and Tannoy ceiling speakers are available for use during videoconferencing calls. A Lutron lighting system also provides versatility to this environment.

Both the Emergency Operations Center and the Videoconference and Telemedicine Room share a high-performance Polycom videoconferencing system. Additionally, an advanced control system from Crestron is shared; both conference rooms contain one wireless, touch screen control panel. Also critical to the success of these rooms is the availability of an AMD Telemedicine microscope that is equipped with a digital camera. This device is connected to the videoconferencing system through the use of a floor box in the Emergency Operations Center, and also an input adapter in the Videoconference and Telemedicine Room. The Y-shaped microscope puts all controls and adjustments within easy reach, and has preset magnifications of 4x, 10x, 20x and 40x that offer quick and convenient analysis options.
