NEOUCOM Pharmacy and Multidisciplinary Labs

NEOUCOM, Rootstown, OH

Design and Installation

Challenge:

The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) are community-based, public institutions that provide interdisciplinary training of health professionals, offering both a doctor of medicine (M.D.) and a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.

Faced with increasing enrollment, NEOUCOM leadership sought to expand their Rootstown, Ohio campus with new labs for both the School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. Integration environments would include the 35-station Pharmacy Laboratory, as well as the Multi-Disciplinary Lab (MDL). Designing systems for the MDL would prove the most challenging, as the AV systems would need to be able to handle the diverse curriculum and teaching methods used by different instructors.

Solution:

The 130-station MDL features a fully-equipped instructor's station and 15 flat screen monitor computers, each with an interactive whiteboard display, which can be used for annotating. The moveable workstations allow for configuring the room as one open area, or divided into two or four rooms for small group work.

The MDL's AV system would need to seamlessly and successfully perform, meeting the diverse needs and curriculum delivery of each instructor. Additionally, the system needed to efficiently run with a strict emphasis on user-friendly capabilities. Instructors would not have the time to request help from an AV technician in order to set-up the system that accommodating their individual courses.

Today, the MDL's flexible and unique system provides an effective teaching environment that can support current and future curriculums. Each sub-system provides the same tools and technologies for use by audiences of varying capacities. This system is very easy to use for the non-technical and/or untrained users. Each class can be recorded, saved to the network and viewed/streamed at a later time by the students to help increase retention levels.

Maximum operational efficiency is delivered through the effective tracking of AV systems. Current configurations are regularly monitored, ensuring that quick reconfigurations can be made in order to meet the next teaching agenda. A key priority in the AV design, this type of programming prevents any loss of critical instruction time.

Additionally, class updates are comprehensively delivered through the use of digital signage applications. Our solution for this project includes the use of 2 - 4-" WXGA LCD monitors from Samsung, as well as side mounted speakers for enhanced audio.

Equipment Highlights:
