Microsoft Innovation Lab

Microsoft Corporation, Waltham, MD

Design and Installation

Challenge:

When Microsoft was designing its new Technology Center in the Boston metro area, executives knew that it needed more than a PowerPoint presentation to effectively market its new generation of e-commerce solutions. Always a leader in technology, Microsoft used the latest in presentation technology to redefine the concept of a conference room and the nature of a sales presentation.

Solution:

Located within Microsoft's Technology Center, the unique 24-seat Innovation Lab includes four "vignettes": two represent offices, one represents a home and one represents an airport. Each vignette is a stage where Microsoft demonstrates current and near-future technology that is being used and will be used in and between each of these environments.

The Innovation Lab enlivens sales calls by incorporating video and lighting systems from entertainment venues. Four 36" monitors, a HDTV plasma display, and an 84" rear-projection screen are used to display video and data from a variety of sources, including Web TV, Internet, DVD, videoconferencing, and computer graphics. The lighting system has more than 70 pre-programmed light cues to spotlight presenters and products. The lighting, audio, and video systems are controlled by a Crestron touch screen panel and a Crestron control system. The control system has "hooks" built into it for voice control capabilities.

Equipment Highlights:

NEC plasma display; Mitsubishi Megaview Monitors; rear-projection screen; Crestron control system; microphones; speakers
