Health Science Center Distance Learning Classroom

Challenge:

The Health Science Center at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse is designed to provide advanced healthcare training to western Wisconsin. The center includes 14 classrooms, six laboratories, and two sophisticated distance learning classrooms. Effectively-designed and enhanced distance learning classrooms were crucial to the success of the Health Science Center.

Solution:

The unique design of the distance learning classrooms includes the effective placement of digital camera technology. Two front cameras feature wide-angle and zooming capabilities, and another is recessed in the ceiling for the viewing patients or items placed on the front table. An additional camera is installed in a seat spot in the front row. The unique placement of a camera in the front row provides students in remote locations an intimate view of the instructor, placing the distance learner in the front row of the classroom. This camera was placed in a custom-designed cabinet that also included two 27" monitors, thereby allowing the instructor to view both ends of the videoconference call without turning around.

Behind the instructor, two large rear projection screens are installed -- 120" screens in the 80-seat classroom and 100" in the 40-seat classroom. Two Epson projectors are installed in each room on mirror-rack mounts. A Panja touch panel is installed in the front podium so that the instructor has easy control of the cameras and other AV equipment. JBL Control speakers installed to provide complete sound coverage in the classrooms.

Additionally, the push-to-talk Crown microphones placed throughout the seating area are essential to effective learning. One microphone is installed for every two seats. When the microphone is keyed on, the zoom camera in the front of the room can automatically focuses on the student.
